Corporate compliance is critically important to the continued success of our company. But, how much do you really know about corporate compliance? To help you better understand our corporate compliance program – and how it functions – we're introducing a new monthly article series: the Corporate Compliance Corner.

The Corporate Compliance Corner will share tips and information about our corporate compliance program, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), email security, protected health information (PHI), and potential compliance issues. We'll take a closer look at each of these topics in Insights, beginning with an overview of our corporate compliance program.

Symbria corporate compliance program overview
The Symbria corporate compliance program provides enforcement and leadership through a system of policies and procedures, monitoring and auditing tools, and communication and reporting methods. We designed this program to follow state and federal laws as well as federal healthcare program requirements, which include seven essential elements of compliance:

  1. Compliance officer and committee
  2. Written policies, procedures, and standards of conduct
  3. Training and education
  4. Effective lines of communication
  5. Enforcing standards with well-publicized disciplinary guidelines
  6. Auditing and monitoring
  7. Responding promptly to offenses and developing corrective action
