Section GG requirements: How we’re helping our client communities comply (2)
LeadingAge recently provided an overview of the new Section GG: Functional Abilities and Goals, which is now part of the PPS 5-day assessment and the Part A PPS discharge assessment. The data in Section GG is needed to calculate a new CMS-mandated SNF-QRP quality measure that requires skilled-nursing providers to assess functional abilities at the beginning of a Part A stay and to set at least one discharge goal for an area of functional status listed in Section GG. CMS also now requires an assessment of usual function at the end of a Part A stay. Section GG is not required for any payer source other than original Medicare Part A.
Alliance Rehab and Casamba – our therapy time tracking, billing, and documentation vendor – have taken the following steps to help our rehab client communities comply with these new requirements:
- Alliance Rehab provided a comprehensive training program for our therapists last month that included an overview of the IMPACT Act 2014, MDS 3.0 Section GG, and Section GG Coding, including examples of clinical situations.
- Section GG data is being gathered across all therapy disciplines during the assessment periods. Casamba is capturing the data provided by the therapists in a new Therapy Observations for Section GG section that will help Alliance Rehab client communities appropriately complete Section GG in the MDS. This data is available in Casamba for all admissions on or after 9/24 (because 10/1 would be day 8 for patients admitted on 9/24).
Our Program Managers will work closely with the interdisciplinary team at each of our rehab client communities to provide assistance with the new Section GG requirements. CMS has also posted several training videos online that provide information about Section GG.
